The temperature just hit 103 degrees and with wilting, miserable humidity, it is way too hot for enjoying anything outside. I hope summer is making its last stand.
Teaming up with the oppressive heat are too many work deadlines and not enough cash for the month-long private island holiday I have in mind, so I’m banging around the house looking for an escape and wondering if there are any popsicles in the freezer.
Coping mechanism #1 is checking out my TBR pile. The little towers of collected but not yet read books I have around the house never fail as a solid, happy distraction. As it always happens, the cover of today’s selection brought it to the top of the pile. With its promise of glamour and escape, or the subtle offer to get away to another era, Come Fly The World: the Jet-Age Story of The Women of Pan Am by Julia Cooke won the toss.
Out came some vintage vinyl and the cocktail gear. What followed was a lovely afternoon sipping a Side Car with Pan Am Stews Hazel, Clare, and Lynne living out their dreams of freedom, adventure, and getting more from life than midcentury girls were supposed to hope for.
If you’re looking for something dishy like the famous “Coffee, Tea or Me,” this isn’t that book. But, it does deliver interesting storylines for the women whose careers we follow, early 60’s jet-setting glamour, and insight into how these interacted with a changing America.
This is an easy and engaging read and a nice “flight” away from an overheated present day. Like a perfect cocktail, its parts made an enjoyable whole; just the right amount of history, a generous pour of glamour and stories that let you travel.
Off to read,
Julie
P.S. Want a Sidecar? 2 ounces cognac, 1 ounce Cointreau, 1ounce lemon juice.
